FIFTH SCENE
The revolt
A group of peasants armed with hoes, pitch forks and sticks barricaded themselves in front of the main door of the monastery of Isola del Gran Sasso, now almost a ruin, to block the transfer of the saint’s remains.

… Nobody gets past here, they want to trick us …
Another peasant
They want to take away from us a saint’s body from this monastery …
And another
… The Mayor has sent a message that Padre Germano has guaranteed him and our committee that the saint’s remains will stay here …
And yet another
… But we’re not moving all the same.
